The relationship between social capital and job satisfaction: a case
study of Kurdistan University’s staff
Abstract:
Social capital is a new concept, emerging in social and economic surveys, rapidly.
Social capital has been defined as the set of cooperative relationships between social
actors that facilitate collective action. Reduction of transactions cost, facilitation of
official affairs (such as contracts, hierarchy, and bureaucratic regulations), job
satisfaction, improving efficiency, information exchange, innovation, and corruption
reduction are common consequents of social capital. This study is an empirical analysis
of the relationship between social capital and job satisfaction among statistical
population of Kurdistan University’s staff, with emphasis on trust dimension.
A sample including 105 respondents was selected, based on classified sampling
method, from statistical population. The data was analyzed by correlation, ANOVA, and
regression analysis.
The ANOVA analysis showed that among demographic characteristics of
respondents (Gender, age, education level, education type, marital status, job type, and
recruitment type) age and education level had a significant relationship with the level of
social capital; and age, job type, education level, education type, and recruitment type
had significant relationship with the job satisfaction level.
The correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between social capital and
job satisfaction.
Regression analysis of job satisfaction on the trust elements of social capital (trust
to own, trust to family, trust to friends and coworkers, trust to official institutions, and
trust to unofficial institutions) indicated that only trust to friends and coworkers, and
trust to official institutions had positive effect on job satisfaction.
