چکیده مقاله:

The study attempts to analyse determinants of enrolment and dropouts in primary education. As school infrastructure and facilities affects the enrolment and dropout of pupil to a large extent, the study also attempts examine the school infrastructure and available facilities in the select sample primary schools. The multiple regression analysis implies that pupil – teacher ratio, teacher training, expenditure on midday meals, visual aids and availability of school building are the important factors affecting primary school enrolment. The analysis reveals that a one per cent decline in pupil – teacher ratio will result in 3.67 per cent increase in the enrolment of pupil, while a one per cent increase in the expenditure on midday meals and visual aids will pull up 1.4 per cent and 1.2 per cent increase in enrolment of pupil. Further, the teacher training expressed in terms of schooling experience in years and the availability of school building represented by dummy variable also seen to have significant impact on enrolment of pupil. Moreover, the analysis relating to dropouts implies that family income, pupil – teacher ratio and literacy level of parents are the important factors affecting primary school dropout. The analysis also implies that a one per cent increase in annual family income of pupil will reduce the dropout rate by 1.13 per cent, while one per cent decline in pupil – teacher ratio will result in 1.29 per cent reduction in the dropout of pupil. Further, a one per cent increase in the literacy levels of pupil would check the dropouts by 0.83 per cent.
